Physical & Health Education
Health and Physical Education at Mount Lawley Senior High School focuses on developing healthy, active and positive contributors to the school community.
The Health and Physical Education team at Mount Lawley Senior High School aims to provide a variety of learning experiences that develop healthy, active, positive contributors to the Mount Lawley community. Our programs are designed with a holistic vision where all students are given the opportunity to develop physical skills and abilities along with resilience, teamwork and leadership within all learning area contexts.
Health and Physical Education is located within a shared facility with ECU Mount Lawley Sport and Fitness Centre. Mount Lawley HPE has access to a dual court indoor gymnasium and opportunities throughout the year to access a Multi-Purpose Fitness room, along with outdoor tennis courts, basketball and netball courts, two oval spaces and access to Hamer Park. Strong links to community recreation spaces including Nedlands Yacht Club, Mount Lawley Golf and Tennis Clubs allow unique and diverse learning experiences for Mount Lawley students.

Extra-curricular sport and carnivals
In addition to a comprehensive Health and Physical Education program, Mount Lawley Senior High School offers a variety of extra-curricular opportunities for students including the House and Interschool Swimming and Athletics events, Year 7 – 10 Zone Lightning Carnivals as well as representative teams in Cricket, Soccer, Basketball, AFL, Netball, Hockey, Volleyball, and Cross Country to name a few.
Physical Education
Includes two sessions per week for Years 7-10, covering invasion, net/wall and striking games as well as fitness and athletics. The aim of the sessions is to develop healthy, active members of the community through the development of physical ability as well as leadership, organisation and team work skills.
Health
Is delivered across the school from years 7 – 10 in one session per week. Through an engaging curriculum, Health endeavours to develop our student's ability to access, evaluate and apply appropriate information and resources to take positive action to protect, enhance and advocate for their own and others' health and wellbeing across their lifespan.
Outdoor Education
Through interaction with the natural world, the Outdoor Education option aims to develop an understanding of our relationships with the environment, others and ourselves, and ultimately contribute towards a sustainable world. The integrated approach within this course allows for practical activities, theoretical concepts, and relationship with the environment to be incorporated into a meaningful program of learning.
Sport Science
Sport Science is a Year 10 option for students who demonstrate an advanced level of interest and aptitude for Physical Education. Students will explore ever growing world of Sport Science through both Practical and Theoretical classes.
Advanced Sport and Coaching
Advanced Sport and Coaching is a new elective which offers students a pathway into General Physical Education Studies and Vocational Education in particular Certificate II Sport Coaching in Year 11 and 12. The course will provide students opportunities to plan and deliver fundamental coaching lessons to like-minded peers and students from younger cohorts.

In this General course students explore health as a dynamic quality of life. They will consider the way in which beliefs and attitudes influence health decisions and learn how to plan and take action that will promote their own and the health of others. They examine the impact of social and environmental factors on health and use inquiry skills to investigate and respond to relevant issues. The course also provides students with opportunities to develop skills that will enable them to pursue careers in health promotion, research or community health care.

In this ATAR course students explore health as a dynamic quality of life. They examine the impact of social, environmental, economic and biomedical determinants on health and their collective contribution to health disparities, as well as exploring approaches to address barriers which prevent groups from experiencing better health. Students apply inquiry skills to examine and analyse health issues, develop arguments and draw evidence-based conclusions. The course also provides students with opportunities to develop skills that will enable them to pursue careers in health promotion, research or community health care.

Outdoor Education (General)
Through interaction with the natural world, Outdoor Education aims to develop an understanding of our relationships with the environment, others and ourselves. The Outdoor Education General course focuses on outdoor activities in a range of environments, including bushwalking, sailing, climbing and orienteering. It provides students with an opportunity to develop essential life skills and physical activity skills, and an opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of the environment and develop a positive relationship with nature. The course also provides students with opportunities to develop skills that will enable them to pursue personal interests and careers in outdoor pursuits, environmental management, or eco-tourism.

Physical Education Studies contributes to the development of students' physical, social and emotional growth. The Physical Education Studies General course provides students with opportunities to understand and improve performance through the integration of theoretical concepts and practical activities. Through engagement as performers, leaders, coaches, analysts and planners of physical activity, students may develop skills that can be utilised in leisure, recreation, education, sport development, youth work, health and medical fields. |
Physical Education Studies contributes to the development of students' physical, social and emotional growth. In the Physical Education Studies ATAR course students learn about physiological, psychological and biomechanical principles, and apply these to analyse and improve personal and group performances in physical activities. Throughout the course, students learn through integrated written, oral and active learning experiences. The course also provides students with opportunities to develop skills that will enable them to pursue personal interests and potential in physical activity as athletes, coaches, officials, administrators and/or volunteers. |

Certificate qualifications are a pathway to WACE and employment for all students. Students will develop skills desired by employers and will place them in good stead for employment while embarking upon other studies post Year 12. Students choose which qualifications they undertake in conjunction with their Course Counsellors and their parents. Students will be required to complete the enrolment and induction with the appropriate Registered Training Organisation (RTO) partnering with Mount Lawley Senior High School to deliver the qualifications chosen. Upon successful completion of all units of competencies in the qualifications, students will be issued with the appropriate qualification by the Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
