Junior Girls Basketball
This year the Mount Lawley Senior High School Junior Basketball Team achieved some incredible success across two different carnivals and a grand final match. In early Term 3, a team made up of Year 9s and one Year 7 student competed in the School Sport WA (SSWA) Central Division carnival, playing against Churchlands, Bob Hawke, Shenton and Perth Modern. The team comfortably won all their games and won in the final against Shenton College to be crowned Central Division Winners. The team had now qualified to compete at the North of the River Finals.
This carnival took place in Week 9 of Term 3 and all the girls were very excited about the challenge of playing some new schools. The girls were in Pool A up against Kinross, Duncraig, Perth Modern and Carine, they had a rocky start losing to Carine SHS in their first game though bounced back to win all their pool games, putting them second in the pool and up against the winners of Pool A, John Septimius Roe ACS, in the first semi-final. The girls were all very focused in this game and showed great teamwork and skill to come out with a solid win. This bought them back to playing in the North of the River Final against Carine who had beaten Woodvale SC in their semi-final. The girls recovered from their lost at the start of the day to win this close game, 15-10.
Mount Lawley were now crowned the North of the River winners and through to the SSWA Junior Champion Schools Grand Final, something usually reserved for basketball specialised schools. In the last Tuesday of Term 3, the team came up against basketball heavy weights and South of the River winners, Willetton SHS, in the Grand Final. The girls played strongly but went down to Willetton and ended as Girls Junior Basketball Champion School Runners-Up. This was a massive achievement for the team and has them as one of Mount Lawley’s most successful basketball teams. They each got individual medals and their shield now sits in the MLSHS sports trophy cabinet. We look forward to seeing these girls progress through to the senior competition next year and know there is more success coming their way!
