City of Vincent Project
At the end Term 1, and for a substantial part of Term 2, the Academic Enrichment students from Year 10 have been delving into the history pages and digging deep to learn more about the City of Vincent.
The City of Vincent library ran a competition to uncover Vincent's rich history through the Local History Awards 2016.
The awards are designed to encourage and reward the community to participate in sharing and recording the life in Vincent.
Mrs. Julie Davidson, Senior Librarian, City of Vincent Library and Local History Centre, visited the school and encouraged the students to hone their skills as historians.
The students worked in groups and did a great research on many important landmarks and businesses of this city, the ANZAC Cottage, the Brookman and Moir Street Development, the Queens Tavern and Hyde Park, Purslowe Funerals and the Re Store to name a few.
The students were very surprised and interested to know about how the city has changed shape and how businesses have coped with changing times.
One group did a prize-winning research on the East Perth Loco Depot now the East Perth Train Station.
The team of Samuel, Max, Samuel and Eric traced the history of this historic landmark from its birth in 1882 as the Perth Station Yard to its current shape. This yard was used for the maintenance and storage of train engines, as well as receiving goods via the train line.
The team won the second prize of $200 in the Open Award. Congratulations to the young historians!
