History in the Making - Literacy and Bike Club Newsflash
History is being made at Lawley.
A Year 7 Chapter of the bike club has been established thanks to two persistent and tenacious Year 7 students who tracked down Mr Camilleri through the kind support of Middle School secretary, Mrs Evans.
They pleaded relentlessly for the Year 9 Literacy and Bike Program to be made available to them and other interested students in their year group.
Their resourcefulness has been rewarded but only after they convinced Community 1 team leader, Mrs O'Brien of the merits of the program; and after a volunteer mentor, Glen from Pal and Panther a bike shop in Charles Street, was recruited to assist on Thursday mornings.
Glen's enthusiasm and outstanding communication skills have been a hit with the students.
As well as helping them with bike repairs he takes short teaching sessions in which he explains the intricacies of bike maintenance.
As far as we can ascertain this is the first time that a Year 7 Bike and Literacy program has been established in a Western Australian public school.
So to the Year 7 boys who are responsible for this, Lachlan and Jett, congratulations!
